Artificial intelligence (AI) has quickly become a popular tool for learning. If you have a scientific question about how or why something works, AI can be an excellent resource. It is fast, accessible, and often provides clear explanations. However, even with all of its advantages, AI cannot replace the power of human connection --- especially when it comes to learning, tutoring, and academic success.
What AI still lacks is the ability to truly listen. A human can hear what you are saying, notice hesitation or uncertainty, and respond intuitively without needing the “right” prompt. Encouragement from someone who genuinely wants to see you succeed carries a weight that technology has not yet learned to replicate.
There is no doubt that technology --- and AI in particular --- is here to stay. It will replace some jobs and create new ones. More importantly, it is likely to replace those who do not learn how to use it effectively. Like any powerful tool, AI works best when guided by human knowledge, judgment, and experience.
AI is most effective when you already have a solid foundation in a subject. In those cases, it can enhance understanding, reinforce concepts, and improve efficiency. When you are knowledgeable, you are also better equipped to recognize when AI provides information that does not align with what you know to be true. At times, AI generates responses that sound confident but are incomplete or incorrect. That is when critical thinking becomes essential --- and when checking credible, peer-reviewed sources or primary literature matters most.
For students trying to learn unfamiliar or complex material, relying solely on AI can be frustrating and time-consuming. Even with well-crafted prompts, it can take a long time to arrive at clarity. College and professional students are often expected to absorb large volumes of information in a very short period of time. They do not always have the flexibility to ask hundreds of questions just to understand one difficult concept.
This is often why students seek tutoring. It is not simply about getting the right answer --- it is about understanding why the answer is correct. A human tutor can hear confusion, see nonverbal cues, and adjust explanations in real time. That kind of responsiveness is especially important when learning feels overwhelming.
Learning is rarely just an academic process. Fatigue, frustration, fear of failure, and self-doubt can all interfere with progress. Many students are balancing work, family, financial stress, and personal responsibilities alongside their studies. Ideally, there would be time for family, friendships, and self-care --- but realistically, it can be difficult to make space for even one of those, let alone all three.
In my experience, support from a person who is empathetic --- someone who understands these pressures and meets students where they are --- can make a meaningful difference. Human connection does not simply enhance learning; for many students, it is what makes learning possible.
Where AI and Human Support Work Best Together
AI can be a powerful supplement to learning, but it works best alongside human guidance. When students combine technology with personalized tutoring, encouragement, and real-time feedback, they often gain confidence faster and retain information more effectively.
If you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of your understanding, working with a human tutor may help bridge that gap. Sometimes, what you need is not only an explanation --- but someone who can listen, adapt, and help you move forward with clarity and confidence.
